Signed hardcover of The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss

Item Name and Description: One of four signed hardcovers of The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss. Donated by DAW Books.

Discover #1 New York Times-bestselling Patrick Rothfuss’ epic fantasy series, The Kingkiller Chronicle.

“I just love the world of Patrick Rothfuss.” —Lin-Manuel Miranda • “He’s bloody good, this Rothfuss guy.” —George R. R. Martin • “Rothfuss has real talent.” —Terry Brooks

OVER 1 MILLION COPIES SOLD!

DAY ONE: THE NAME OF THE WIND

My name is Kvothe.

I have stolen princesses back from sleeping barrow kings. I burned down the town of Trebon. I have spent the night with Felurian and left with both my sanity and my life. I was expelled from the University at a younger age than most people are allowed in. I tread paths by moonlight that others fear to speak of during day. I have talked to Gods, loved women, and written songs that make the minstrels weep.

You may have heard of me.

So begins a tale unequaled in fantasy literature—the story of a hero told in his own voice. It is a tale of sorrow, a tale of survival, a tale of one man’s search for meaning in his universe, and how that search, and the indomitable will that drove it, gave birth to a legend.

These signed hardcovers are from the eighteenth printing, with the original cover.

Starting Bid: $7.

Shipping: Worldwide.

Other Notes: Personalization of the signature is not available. Four available; top four bids win. Consecutive bids must still increase.

Auction items needed by this Sunday, April 23

Con or Bust’s annual auction is its principal source of funds for the next twelve months, and right now the auction does not have nearly enough things on offer. If you’d like to submit something for auction—please do!—you should do so by this Sunday, April 23, 2017, at 9:00 p.m. Eastern (time zone conversionscountdown).

Anyone at all can offer something to be auctioned; all you need is an email address. Con or Bust tends to run heavy on books and writing-related offers, for obvious reasons, but crafts, care packages, that good-condition piece of clothing or jewelry that you just never wear—anything legal, practical, and morally and ethically appropriate is welcome. Here’s more information, or you can jump right to the Submit an Auction form. We’ll even host your images for you!

Again, this is the main way that we raise funds for the entire year, and right now the list of things on auction is pretty short compared to prior years (browse through a Google Docs index, or view all the tags). It’s full of cool stuff, don’t get me wrong! But not nearly as much of it as I would like, considering that in 2016, Con or Bust was able to commit to providing $19,237.00 in direct monetary assistance to fans of color/non-white fans—an amount that did not come anywhere near meeting the requests that we received. We do everything we can do keep administrative expenses at a minimum, and everyone who works on Con or Bust is a volunteer. (You can find the full details of our 2016 finances at the annual report, or learn more about Con or Bust generally.)

So: if you can offer something for auction, that would be extremely welcome; here’s more information and the Submit an Auction form. If not, here are some other ways you can support Con or Bust—including, as always, spreading the word.

Thanks very much!

(This post will be made sticky for a day or two; scroll down or check the sidebar for new auction items.)

Redder than Blood by Tanith Lee

Item Name and Description: one of two trade paperbacks of Redder than Blood by Tanith Lee. Donated by DAW Books.

A vampiric Snow White whose pious stepmother is her only salvation….

A supernatural Cinderella who strikes at midnight, leaving behind a prince mad with desire….

A sleeping beauty never meant to be woken…

In her World Fantasy Award-nominated short story collection, Red as Blood, Tanith Lee deconstructed familiar fairy tales, recapturing their original darkness and horror in haunting new interpretations. Behind gilded words and poised princesses, she exposed a sinister world of violence, madness, and dangerous enchantments.

With Redder than Blood, Lee resumes the tradition of twisting tales. Among its nineteen tales, this volume explores unnerving variations of Beauty and the Beast, The Frog Prince, Snow White, and other classics, including three never-before-published stories.

A recognized master fantasist, Tanith Lee has won multiple awards for her craft, including the British Fantasy Award, the World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement, and the Bram Stoker Award for Lifetime Achievement in Horror.

Starting Bid: $5.

Shipping: Worldwide.

Other Notes: Two copies available; top two bids win. Consecutive bids must still increase.
